Hmmmm...Camponotus socius? The head setae seem to match and the long erect hairs on the mesosoma and the gaster really stand out to me, and I can definitely see lighter stripes against a darker...

I am guessing it's probably an arboreal species. It doesn't seem like socius to me. Here's a link of photo of a C. socius minor, head shape's definitely different, not to mention antennae length....

I'd say the head shape, and the difference form the one linked by blueball1st, has more to do with viewing angle of the photo than than with any important difference.

That is very interesting! I'd always thought that C. socius was endemic to FL, but I guess it's not even native. Definitely up there as one of the most beautifully colored North American ants.

The type specimen for Camponotus socius is from Brazil (Roger, 1863). Doctorant tells me the species in the U.S. may be different from what Roger collected, and in due course will receive a different...
